The Tuskegee Airmen refers to the individuals who were
involved in the “Tuskegee Experiment” in the early 1940s. This program, which
was part of the Army Air Corps, trained African Americans to fly and maintain aircraft used in
combat. This included navigators, instructors, bombardiers, maintenance and
support, and the most glorified of these people-- pilots. (1)
Named Tuskegee Airmen due to their training location in Tuskegee, Alabama, the military selected Tuskegee for its commitment to aeronautical training. They possessed all the equipment and facilities needed to train pilots. This program became the center for African-American aviation during WWII. (1) Of these great men, Lt John Sloan was one of them. |
